TEXT: PSALM 44:1-26
Psalm 44:1- We have heard with our ears, O God our fathers have told us, the deeds you did in their days, in the days of old…
Psalm 44:4-5- You are my king, O God; command victories for Jacob. Through you we will push down our enemies; through your name we will trample those who rise up against us.
Psalm 44:13- You make us a reproach to our neighbors. A scorn and a derision to those all around us.
Psalm 44:17- All this has come upon us, but we have not forgotten you, nor have we dealt falsely with your covenant.
What the Psalmist described in this verse is what I call FAITHFULNESS. From the first verse, the psalmist talked about the wonderful things they heard from their forefathers. The great things God did in the time of old. From verse 4, he started talking about his expectations from the same God which He heard about. He put his hope and trust in Him. But verse 9-10 describes their sour experience with God.
But why was this same God wonderful to their fathers? Verse 17 amazes me. The psalmist said, “All this has come upon us but we have not forgotten you, nor have we dealt falsely with your covenant.” How could he say that despite all that he went through with this God? In the concluding part of that psalm, he prayed to God (Read verse 23-26).
What have you heard about this God? What are your expectations? What is your experience with Him? And what is your response towards Him? Despite all that the Psalmist went through he still held on to the ways of God and His covenant. He did not let go because of his experience. That is FAITHFULNESS- Staying true even in difficult moments. And his response was mind blowing- The Psalmist prayed! Who does that? He prayed to the God that disappointed him. He must have been out of his mind. But really, he wasn’t; in fact, he was very conscious of his actions. He asked God to remember him and arise on his behalf. Why did the Psalmist do this? He knew that fighting God and resenting Him would not change anything, neither would it change God. So he made the right call.
Believer, are you experiencing some dark moments right now and it seems to you like your experience is the exact opposite of the good things you heard about this God? Have you started resenting Him and fighting against His supremacy over your life? If your answer is yes or you are about to do any of the above, please kindly think about the response of the Psalmist and give it a trial. I tell you this because I am confident of a God who answers prayers.
Psalm 34:17-19 says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all”
If truly you have been washed by the blood of Christ which was shed on the cross of Calvary, then you have been made righteous with God through Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20-21) and the above verses are just for you. But if you do not listen to these words and you turn away from the way of the Lord and His covenant, then the Psalmist will stand on the last day as a witness that he went through worse situations yet he did not turn away. Hold on to Jesus and He will bring you through it and He won’t let you down.
PRAYER
Tell God how you feel and all that is in your heart without holding anything back because He is ready to help and comfort you.
