Episode 1:  The Gift

Love is a beautiful thing. Several times, I have seen friends and colleagues claim to fall in love. I had laughed at them, I had teased them. Little did I know I was next to be hit by this storm – the love storm. My name is Victor and love found me.

It seemed to be just like any other day but something felt different. I had my quiet time and something kept me smiling as I made my way through the day’s activities. I had my bath and got ready for class. The plan was to proceed to our fellowship’s worker’s retreat after the conclusion of lectures. I really love spending time with God’s children.

Classes ended in a flash, I had my lunch, spoke with friends and then it was time. Getting a bus was proving difficult and the time of the program was getting closer. I was getting worried and began to consider alternatives. Within a few minutes, I was able to get a seat on a bus. In no time, we were parked at the front of the chapel. Getting down, bringing my spirit man to the consciousness of where we were, everything felt different, the atmosphere was heavily charged.

I made my way quietly into the chapel and I found a lovely space to stay at the back. Many on their knees were deep in worship; many more had tears rolling down as they worshipped. I put myself away from the side attractions and focused on my fellowship with the father even as the worship team continued to raise songs birthed by the spirit.

It was time for the word, and a young beautiful lady was to minister. Immediately she held the mic, there was an increase in the intensity. She started by singing: “I’ll put you in front, in front of my melody, you’re all that matters”. As simple and popular as the song was, it came powerfully and took us into “another measure, another one thousand”! Before she finished teaching, practically everyone was already on their feet praying in understanding and in diverse tongues. It was really an amazing time in God’s presence.

The message, which was two hours, felt like five minutes. As the meeting ended, I noticed she was with the ushering team who were counting the offering. I turned to Bro Nath who is my friend and fellowship’s prayer coordinator.  “Today’s retreat was very powerful, it was obvious that the Lord was here,” I said. “God is really wonderful. When God spoke to us that Sister Gift should be the one ministering, we were perplexed as we only know her to be committed and dedicated to the ushering unit. Who would have thought God would use her this much?” Bro Nath replied. “Wait! You mean she attends this same fellowship? How come I’m just seeing her?” “Apart from the fact that you always rush home after the fellowship, she is usually with the chief usher and she prays for most of our programs; she really isn’t a public person.”

Just as he finished that statement, a loud shout of “Amen” by the ushering department made us turn our heads to their direction and my eyes somehow went straight to her. There she was, stunning and absolutely beautiful, and as she removed the hair strand from her face, a veil was removed from my eyes. I have seen beautiful ladies, but I must say something about this lady was different.

“Bro Victor, Bro Victor!!” “Yes sir,” I replied. “I have been calling your name; you seemed distracted or lost in thought.” I laughed, realizing I was completely taken by her.” What level is she?” I asked “300l,” he replied. “Department nko?” I continued. “Why you dey interview me bro?” Nath said jokingly. As I was about to defend myself, a sweet tiny voice distracted us again. This time it was Gift’s voice.

“Bro Nath, don’t forget our test on Monday oo,” she said with a beaming smile. “I won’t, thanks for reminding me,” was his response. “You’re in the same department!!, Lobatan,” I said, with my hands hitting my face like that famous WhatsApp emoji. “Yes na. Computer engineering no be beans na. In fact, you can’t count top three in the department and not count her,” Bro Nath added. “Ahh, omo tan!!” I said, “She is not only on fire for God, she is on fire in her academics; what else am I looking for?” I said. “Victor o…” “Nath oo…” “Victor o…” “Nath o…” Bro Nath faked a cough then laughed…I couldn’t erase the smile I had on. “Bro Nath, moya look away o.” We both burst into laughter as we made our way back to our hostels.

As I reflected on how much had changed in few hours, I now understood what people meant when they said: “When you meet her you will know”. I like this girl, scratch that, I love her. Whether you believe in love at first sight or not., in this case, know that anything and everything is possible.

Once again, looking at the pictures sent to the fellowship’s WhatsApp group, I saw her lovely “firetic” face during the ministration, placed the picture of her face on my chest and whispered, “You’re really a gift to my world”.
