It was Richard’s 47th birthday. He got another reason for celebration as he got to work. His promotion had been approved. He was now the Regional Sales Manager.

As he held the promotion letter in his hands, members of staff trooped in and sang “Happy Birthday”. Then they congratulated him on his promotion. “Oga, we will wash it o. Lunch’s on you.” Richard smiled. “No wahala. I’m capable.”

After the crowd cleared, Richard opened his bag and brought out two letters.

One was dated 30th June, 2001. It was the admission letter he received from the London School of Arts. He had applied there four times before he was finally offered admission to study scriptwriting.

The second letter was written on the same day he received the first. The 30th day of June 2001. Immediately he received his admission letter, he drafted his resignation. He had always wanted to follow his dream and being a sales rep was not his path.

In the letter, he appreciated the management for their support and guidance, as he wished the company well in their future endeavours.

Sadly, he never submitted the resignation letter. The morning he wanted to submit the letter, he opened the newspaper and saw the number of vacancies in there. His heart skipped a beat. He wondered if he was not making a mistake by deciding to resign. All these talk about following your dream…who dream help?

And so, 18 years after, Richard was still left wondering how his life would have been if he took the opportunity to study scriptwriting. Holding his promotion letter in his hands, he decided that he was not going to wonder any more.

So he opened his laptop and typed..”Dear sir, it is with sincere gratitude that I write to you…”
