“Olusola couldn’t hold the tears. She watched as Junior went up to take the oath of office. He walked up looking absolutely smashing. Her heart skipped a beat. Her son had been elected as the Governor of the state. She had to pinch herself for her to be sure it wasn’t a dream. As he read his acceptance speech, she drifted to a time years earlier…

She had gone to pick Junior and Toyosi from school. As they dropped their school bags, she went to the kitchen to get them something to eat while they brought out their assignment notes. On getting back into the place where her children were, she saw them looking up at her. Eventually, Junior spoke: “Mummy. Garri again?” It was more of a statement than a question, and it hurt her. It really did. She thought of what she could do to brighten up her children and then a thought hit her. Quickly, she dropped the garri on the floor beside the kids and told them to give her a minute.

The next place she went was to the woman selling smoked fish across the street. “Iya Risi, e joor e fun mi ni eja. Ko si owo l’owo mi, sugbon ma fi bata mi ati gele mi sile titi ma a fi ri owo” (Iya Risi, please give me fish. I don’t have money but I’ll leave my shoe and headgear here until I pay for it). So, she got the fish. She knew the items she dropped as guarantee were worth more than the fish she got but they were worth nothing compared to the smile on her children’s faces when she walked in and held the nylon aloft like a trophy of some sorts.

With a grin as wide as River Niger, she watched as Junior and Toyosi ate the fish joyfully. Suddnely, she felt a tap on her shoulder. It was her husband. She was so lost in her thoughts that she did not realize that her son had appealed to everyone to give a standing ovation to his parents. As she came back to reality, she held the hands of her childhood love, Adetayo, who was also in tears. This was beyond their wildest imaginations. This was Ephesians 3:20 in action

PS. The story is fictional. For I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. Romans 8:18
