“I will also turn against those who commit spiritual prostitution…” Leviticus 20:6 NLT
Imagine for a moment that you are Mr. Ade. Two weeks after your wedding ceremony you walk in and find your wife with another man on your matrimonial bed. What would be your reaction? Now, let’s assume you forgive her. Six months later, you realise that she is spending more time with another man on the phone. When you confront her, she says she loves you so much. However, from the way she spends her time, even a blind man can see that her heart is set on someone else. What would be your reaction? I would love to read your views!
Jehovah Jireh. Prince of Peace. King of Kings. These are names of God. However, there is one that I came across a while back. JEALOUS. “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God” Exodus 34:14. This name was not given by anyone. It was God who introduced Himself to His people as JEALOUS. To further drive home the point, the first of the Ten Commandments is: “You shall have no other gods before me” Exodus 20:3. God makes it clear that He does not want any rival!
An idol is anything that takes the place of God in our hearts. In the past, idols were considered as strange looking, scary creatures that were presented with palm oil and the likes. However, in contemporary times, there are contemporary idols. Phones. Tablets. TV shows. Games. Movies. Food. These are examples of the idols that we “worship” nowadays. You can add more examples. I’ll share my experience and we conclude.
Some years back, I got introduced to a game. Football Manager. Those who know about it are smiling already. Well, the game is a football simulation that is quite fun. As I began to enjoy the game, I began to “worship” the game. I would sleep pretty late in the night playing the game and it would be the first thing I would do when I woke up. I was committing spiritual prostitution. I was joining myself to something else other than my number one lover: Christ.
Today, God wants us to check our hearts and our lives. He wants us to consider if there are any strangers trying to share His space in our lives? If we find any, we should boldly come to the throne of grace to obtain mercy and help. Ask God for the Grace to put Him first!
