Things had been going badly for my family, to put it mildly. We had to withdraw my kids from the school they were attending because we could no longer afford the fees. My wife was trying all she could, just as I was. However, all our efforts seemed like a drop in the ocean. For the past 18 months, my company had not gotten any major contract. There were some contracts that we executed, but they were more like charity cases.

However, one day something happened. I got to know about a major contract. It was for the African Development Bank! *Baba God, please pick up my call o*. Things went well. I got to the final phase of the process. We hadn’t told the children anything about it; we didn’t want to get their hopes high only to dash them. We fasted and prayed. At work, all of us put in sleepless nights dotting the “Is” and crossing the “Ts”. I had it in mind to get the piece of land that our church was praying about. It was going to be a pleasant surprise. Finally, a date was set for the final decision by the board. *deep breath*. On the said date, I waited and waited…and then finally I got a text message

WATER IS GOOD FOR THE BODY. To get more life-changing tips, text BETTER LIFE to 397. I could not help but shake my head. Finally, I got the mail. “Dear Mr. _______________, you performed admirably all through the phases of the process. However, we regret to inform you that…” I blanked out. WHY! LORD, WHY!

The next thought that crossed my mind was that I should hit the bar. I had been addicted to alcohol before I met Christ and I could almost taste the cold bottle of beer running down my throat. At least it would make me forget my fears for a while even if it didn’t bring total succour.

But then, I decided not to. Well, not me exactly. I think God helped me realize that the booze was just a temporary thing and  I would only wake up with a hangover. The problem would still be there. So in my dejected state, I headed home. Getting home, I was greeted by megawatts of darkness. It made me wish I was somewhere better. My wife was so happy when I walked in. She had already prepared my favourite dish in anticipation. I didn’t say a word to her. The pain was plainly written on my face. I walked to the room, fell on the bed and slept off with tears in my heart. All the while, I kept asking myself “Why, Lord Jesus? Why?”…

PS. The story is fictional, but it mirrors the condition of so many people. At times, God does not seem to make sense. However, He encourages us with His word: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Hold on. God is at work. Check out other stories on this blog. I am sure they will bless you.
